Font Technology in MPEG-4

  MPEG-4

MPEG-4 is a multimedia compression standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), which also developed the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards. These standards make interactive video on DVD, CD-ROM and Digital Television possible.

In December of 2002, the MPEG Standards Committee adopted OpenType as the font format representation for MPEG-4, based on a proposal from Monotype Imaging. It also approved Monotype Imaging’s MicroType™ Express 2.0 as the font compression technology utilized by MPEG-4.

OpenType® - OpenType brings the two most popular font technologies together and extends them with new typographic and line layout capabilities. OpenType is the new standard for high quality type in print and on the Web.

MicroType® Express 2.0 - Lossless font compression technology, which has been widely adopted in many different applications for the purpose of font embedding. This patented technology generates characters of exceptionally high quality, without impeding size or performance.

Windows® Compatible Fonts - The MPEG-4 specification requires that any MPEG-4 terminal shall support the set of resident fonts - at least three generic fonts (serif, sans serif and typewriter or monospaced) should be supported. The specification also requires that resident fonts be metrically compatible with three Windows core fonts – Arial®, Times New Roman® and Courier®. Metric compatibility of resident fonts assures that the content layout and appearance is preserved when default fonts are used. For development purposes, Monotype Imaging’s Windows Compatible fonts - Albany®, Thorndale® and Cumberland® are provided in the reference software part of MPEG-4 standard.

iType® Font Engine - Scalable font subsystem for rendering superior quality characters on handheld devices, television screens, various wireless devices and within operating systems.

WorldType® Layout Engine - A modular software library for composing, positioning and rendering multilingual text, including complex scripts.

Unicode® Fonts - A primer on our Unicode font solutions.
